Dick Taylor Craft Chocolate occupies a landmark building on the Eureka waterfront- one of Old Town's oldest structures, dating to the late 1800s and home over the years to an opera house, dance hall, feed store, and grocery, among other uses. The building had been vacant for years before Dick Taylor brought it back to life as a craft chocolate retail shop and café.
The project involved restoring the historic structure while making it work for a contemporary retail and hospitality use. A notable detail is an original redwood turned column that was relocated into the retail space, anchoring the interior and connecting the new use to the building's long history. The warm interior- exposed wood trusses, concrete floors, generous windows- does justice to the character of the original building.
An outdoor semi-enclosed seating area along the waterfront boardwalk is envisioned as a future phase, further activating the waterfront edge.
