A long-vacant mid-century building in Arcata- boarded up and attracting graffiti- found new life as an office for mental health professionals. Rather than erasing the building's character, the design leaned into its mid-century bones, preserving the low roofline, horizontal massing, and original proportions that give it its quiet dignity.
The main design challenge was accessibility. A new ramp was threaded into the entry sequence to provide a fully accessible path of travel into what had been an inaccessible space- no small thing in a community with a shortage of accessible professional office space. Inside, the layout separates the waiting and reception area from the clinical offices, providing the privacy that mental health services require.
The project was completed in approximately one year.
