Myrtle Avenue Senior Housing provides 36 units of affordable senior housing on a challenging infill site near Cooper Gulch Park in Eureka, completing a long-vacant lot in an established residential neighborhood. The building's gabled roofline responds to the surrounding single-family context, and colorful porches give each unit a distinct identity- the idea being that residents could point to their own unit from the street.
The site drops nearly eleven feet over its length, requiring careful coordination of exterior ramps and interior hall ramping to achieve full accessibility throughout. The Y-shaped building plan creates a protected outdoor seating area tucked away from the busy road in front- a quiet amenity that belies its urban location. Community amenities include a gathering room, fitness room, outdoor patio spaces, and laundry facilities.
The project was a long time in the making- first conceived in 2017 and completed in 2023- reflecting the extended effort required to secure affordable housing funding and bring a project of this complexity to fruition.
